Hello, I am Pastor Esther Gwynne-James nee Ho. Welcome to our church website. I do not know if you are an overseas/placement student or recently moved to Leicester wanting to get information about the Chinese Church, or parents trying to find a suitable church for your children coming overseas. Whoever you may be, I extend a warm welcome to you.
I hope you have read our brief history. The primary vision of our church is to share the Love of God shown to us in Jesus Christ. Our prayer and heart’s desire is to see men and women come to the saving knowledge of Our Lord Jesus Christ. We believe He is the answer to mankind’s spiritual, emotional and physical needs. Jesus said,
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”
Jesus came so that we may have life and have it to the full. His divine plan for every believer is to live over flowing, and an abundant life. It takes times to grow spiritually and appropriate all that God wanted us to enjoy in the richness of our life in Christ.
In my 28 years of involvement in the ministry God had called me among the Chinese in Leicestershire, I am constantly amazed at the way God led different people to faith in Christ. We as his workers are learning to be sensitive to every person. Some come to faith through testimonies of other Christians, some through the love and care Christians showed to them, some through understanding the gospel for themselves, some through family grief, some through health challenges, some pressures of life, personal addictions etc. Jesus has never failed to meet each person at the point of their needs. Praise be to our God.
The Chinese Church in Leicester as well as in many parts of the United Kingdom is unique. Our members come from many Chinese sub-cultural backgrounds. We have members from Hong Kong, from China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and those born and brought up in Britain. Sometimes, we do have non Chinese join in worship service and our prayer is that people of all backgrounds may be welcomed in our midst. Learning to accept each other with our very different backgrounds and value the diversity of gifting God has entrusted to us, are lessons we need to learn and appreciate. As a pastor, I often meditate on these words, “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called Children of God! And that is what we are!”
Although we are called a Chinese Church, our concern is not just the Chinese people. Through our English speaking congregation we have the joy of welcoming Christians from other ethnic groups. So far we have Christians from Mauritian background, Slovakian background and Nigerian-Canadian background and others who have come and moved on. We are very thankful for these Brothers and Sisters who have enriched our lives.
